A new roof was put on the educational building in August at a cost of $5,700
In April Mr. David Parry was hired as our Music Director. In the spring of 1981, plans were underway to remodel the front of the church, including a new walk from the front of the church to the Fellowship Hall. On July 8,a new chapter in the history of West End UMC began with a Church/Charge Conference. At this conference, a resolution called for the addition of a new vestibule, new front porch, steps, and walks to the church. The low bid of $30,795.00 on the construction was made by Coe & Sons of Wytheville, Virginia. The resolution was passed and construction was begun on August 20, 1981, and was ready for use the week of December 13, 1981. During the year, The Fellowship Class began to transform their church classroom into a church parlor. The walls were paneled to a height of 36" and wall paper applied above the paneling. The wall covering was presented in honor of Mrs. Charles Coe by her children. A plush carpet was installed on the floor. Some furniture was also added. Work up to this point was completed and the parlor was used on September 28, 1981. In the spring of 1982, the couch was apholstered and a new mirror added. Once again the Fellowship Class has added another beautiful addition to the church. In October the Administrative Board revised the standing rules of the church. A copy of the Standing Rules is posted in the Board Room.

A new position of Secretary of the Church School was created by the Administrative Board in 1982. The new Church School Secretary keeps all records of the church school attendance and orders all literature and supplies. Larry Bucklen was elected to serve as trhe church's first Church School Secreatary, and has done an excellent job this year. A new carpet was installed in the vestibule in March, 1982. A new lecturn, in memory of Mrs. Virginia Jackson, was added to the church in July, 1982. At the May meeting of the Administrative Board, a committee was appointed to look into the possibility of padding the church pews. It was pointed out that some members of the congregation have illnesses or back trouble that would make padding the pews desirable. This committee reported back tp the board at a call meeting on July 30, 1982, saying that they had received three bids on the job. These bids were discussed and a motion passed by the board that asked the pew committee to continue with this project by going to the congregation and seeing if they could subscribe the full amount of money to complete this project. One bid reviewed at the board meeting of July 30, 1082, quoted a price of $123.50 per pew. This was for 31 pews (25 in main part sanctuary and 6 in the choir). The pulpit chairs and the piano and organ stools would be included free. Cost of the pews was subscribed by the church membership in a matter of ten days after approval of the Administrstive Board. The pew padding was installed October 18 and 19 by Church Interiors of High Point, North Carolina at a cost of $3,828.00.

In the past several years, different Sunday School Classes have conributed to the beauty of the rooms in the education department of the church. It began when the ladies of the Fellowship Class decided to beautify their classsroom. The walls were wainscotted and wall paper was added above it. A beautiful new carpet was put on the floor and new furniture was bought. The whole room took on an entirely new look. All of this came about as the members worked very hard to get the money to pay for it all without turning to the church budget. In 1988, the Asbury Class decided to make changes in their classroom. A new carpet was put on the floor, the walls were wainscotted and wall paper was put on the walls above the wainscotting. This project was completed with with class members doing the work and this project was paid for completely with money raised by the class members.

In March the CHurch Trustees called for classes or individuals to adopt a room to paint or refurbish. Once again the response to this called was very good. The Wesley CLass and the Men's Bible CLass purchased the paint and the members of the Wesley Class painted both rooms. New drapes were also provided for the windows. Also, more recently another great improvement has been made. Several men from the church got together to make a change in the pulpit area. The choir loft was set at an angle and elevated. The organ and piano were moved to other locations and several pews have been moved for better advantage without the loss of any seating space.
